Community Outreach & Onboarding Specialist

Second Haven is seeking a Community Outreach & Onboarding Specialist to help introduce new people to the community and support a welcoming, thoughtful first experience for those who join. This role helps bridge the gap between public-facing outreach and personal connection by making sure people not only hear about Second Haven but also feel oriented, included, and more at ease when they arrive.

This role is ideal for someone who communicates warmly, follows through reliably, and enjoys helping people move from curiosity to belonging.

Role Summary

The Community Outreach & Onboarding Specialist helps support the steady growth of Second Haven by conducting basic outreach and helping new members enter the community with clarity and comfort. This may include sharing information about Second Haven in appropriate places, responding to inquiries, helping interested people understand what the community is, and assisting with the early steps of joining and getting oriented.

This role is part connector, part guide, and part welcoming presence. It involves representing Second Haven in a thoughtful and respectful way while also helping new members take their first steps into the community without feeling lost, overwhelmed, or forgotten.

What This Role May Involve

The Community Outreach & Onboarding Specialist may:

  • Help share Second Haven’s mission, events, and volunteer opportunities in appropriate online spaces
  • Assist with basic outreach to aligned communities, organizations, or interest groups where Second Haven may be relevant
  • Help promote community activities, programs, or openings through social posts, messages, or other simple outreach efforts
  • Respond to initial questions from prospective members or volunteers in a friendly and informative way
  • Help interested people understand what Second Haven is, who it is for, and what they can expect
  • Support new members as they join Discord, the Minecraft server, or other community spaces
  • Help welcome new members and point them toward the next steps for getting started
  • Assist with onboarding tasks such as sharing key information, directing people to rules or orientation materials, and answering basic questions
  • Notice when a new member may need additional support, follow-up, or a gentler introduction to the community
  • Coordinate with other volunteers or leaders to help make onboarding feel smooth and human rather than confusing or impersonal
  • Help identify common questions, friction points, or barriers that new members encounter so the process can be improved over time

What We’re Looking For

A strong Community Outreach & Onboarding Specialist is someone who:

  • Communicates clearly, warmly, and respectfully
  • Is comfortable reaching out to people or responding to inquiries in a thoughtful way
  • Has good judgment about how to represent a community accurately and appropriately
  • Enjoys helping new people feel welcomed and included
  • Is organized enough to follow through on messages, introductions, and onboarding steps
  • Can explain things simply and patiently
  • Understands that first impressions matter and that joining a new community can feel vulnerable or uncertain
  • Is attentive to the needs of people who may be shy, anxious, low-energy, or unfamiliar with Discord, Minecraft, or online communities in general
  • Works well with others and communicates with the team about questions, patterns, or concerns that arise

Familiarity with Discord is especially helpful in this role. Familiarity with Minecraft is also useful though not always required. What matters most is strong communication, sound judgment, and the ability to help people feel informed and welcomed.

Why This Role Matters

Second Haven is designed for people whose lives may include chronic illness, disability, fatigue, pain, mental health challenges, or other barriers to consistent social connection. For many people, joining a new online space can feel like a risk. Even when they are interested, they may hesitate if the process feels confusing, impersonal, or hard to navigate.

The Community Outreach & Onboarding Specialist helps ensure that new community members not only find Second Haven but feel a sense of belonging when they do. They help new people encounter Second Haven as a space that is genuinely prepared to receive them with care.

Their work can make the difference between someone drifting away after initial interest and someone finding their footing in a community where they begin to feel at home.

Support and Structure

This is not a clinical role and does not require providing therapy or crisis support. It is a community-facing role focused on communication, welcome, guidance, and basic relationship-building. The person in this role may work alongside community leaders, facilitators, moderators, Social Media Creators, or other volunteers depending on current needs.

Time Commitment

Time commitment may vary depending on the volunteer’s availability and current outreach or onboarding needs. Some volunteers may help occasionally with specific campaigns or new member support, while others may take on a more regular rhythm of outreach and welcome-related tasks.
