Second Haven is seeking Minecraft Mentors to help new or inexperienced players learn how to navigate the game with greater confidence, comfort, and independence. Minecraft Mentors provide patient, practical support to community members who may feel unsure about gameplay, unfamiliar with basic mechanics, or anxious about learning in a social environment.
This role is especially important in a community like Second Haven, where some members may be new not only to our server, but to Minecraft itself. For some players, the learning curve can feel overwhelming, embarrassing, or mentally taxing. Minecraft Mentors help make that process gentler, more accessible, and more encouraging.
Role Summary
Minecraft Mentors help players build the skills and confidence they need to participate more fully in the community. They offer one-on-one or small-group guidance to players who are learning basic gameplay, adjusting to the controls, or trying to understand how to do common tasks in Minecraft.
This role is part teacher, part coach, and part steady companion. Minecraft Mentors do not need to be technical experts or advanced redstone builders. What matters most is that they are comfortable with the game, able to explain things clearly, and patient with learners who may need extra time, repetition, reassurance, or emotional ease while learning.
A strong mentor helps reduce intimidation without taking over. They support learning in a way that helps players feel capable rather than dependent.
What Minecraft Mentors Do
Minecraft Mentors may:
- Help new players learn basic Minecraft skills, controls, and gameplay systems
- Support players in understanding movement, inventory, crafting, tools, building, survival basics, and other common game functions
- Offer one-on-one or small-group guidance based on a player’s needs and pace
- Explain things in simple, encouraging, and easy-to-follow language
- Help players practice new skills rather than doing everything for them
- Support players who feel anxious, embarrassed, frustrated, or overwhelmed while learning
- Reassure learners that it is okay to ask questions, make mistakes, and learn gradually
- Help players become more comfortable participating in community events, builds, and shared activities
- Notice when a learner may need information presented more slowly, repeated in a different way, or broken into smaller steps
- Communicate with facilitators or staff when a player may need additional support or a different kind of orientation
What We’re Looking For
A strong Minecraft Mentor is someone who:
- Is comfortable playing Minecraft and understands the core basics well enough to teach them
- Is not necessarily an expert, but is clearly beyond the beginner stage
- Can explain gameplay in a patient, calm, and accessible way
- Enjoys helping others learn without making them feel rushed or inadequate
- Has good instincts for teaching, coaching, or supporting someone who is anxious or uncertain
- Knows how to break things down into manageable steps
- Understands that learning can be both practical and emotional
- Can encourage growth without taking control away from the learner
- Communicates clearly and kindly
- Works well with community members who may have fluctuating energy, cognitive fatigue, social anxiety, or long gaps in gaming experience
This role is especially well suited to someone who has a natural mentoring temperament. You do not need formal teaching experience, but the ability to guide, encourage, and adapt to different learners is key.
Why This Role Matters
Second Haven is designed for people whose lives may include chronic illness, disability, fatigue, pain, mental health challenges, or other barriers to consistent social connection. For some members, even joining a Minecraft space can come with uncertainty. They may worry about slowing others down, asking “basic” questions, getting lost, or feeling foolish for not knowing how to play.
Minecraft Mentors help remove those barriers. Their support can turn an intimidating experience into a manageable one, and a confusing game into a place where someone begins to feel capable, included, and at home.
This role is not only about teaching game mechanics. It is about helping people cross the threshold from uncertainty into participation.
Support and Structure
Minecraft Mentors are not expected to provide therapy, crisis support, or clinical guidance. This is a supportive community role focused on teaching, orientation, encouragement, and skill-building. Mentors may work alongside facilitators, moderators, peer support specialists, or other volunteers depending on the situation.
Time Commitment
Time commitment may vary depending on community needs and the volunteer’s availability. Minecraft Mentors may help with occasional player onboarding, individual support, small-group learning sessions, or informal guidance during community activities.
